It All Ends

In the early stages of his art practice, Jeffrey Harris spent a lot of time making drawings and prints, though not as much as painting. Some people prefer the drawings to the paintings, perhaps because the narrative and autobiographical elements are easier to discern and they have no colour. At the time, colour in his paintings was like a Fauve weapon with which he attacked the viewer.

Jeffrey Harris - Squares

Squares

Imagine Jeffrey Harris’s Squares are like stills from a movie. Stacked together in a grid we want to read them as scenes from a story, from left to right, top to bottom. The problem is, they just don’t seem to make sense. We can’t tell what kind of story this is. Horror? Comedy? Drama? The title tells us nothing – it is just a description of how the painting is put together.
